ECU and engine fault codes.
Most modern vehicles today contain an on-board computer which will continually watch the performance of your vehicle. This is called the ECU, or the Engine Control Unit. Sensors throughout the vehicle monitor things like fluid levels and temperature and when an issue occurs, the ECU will respond with an error code and error lights may illuminate on the dashboard.
