The 20p test tells you a lot in ten seconds

Place a 20p coin into the main grooves on the part of the tyre that touches the road. If you can see the outer rim of the coin, your tread is likely close to or below the legal limit and the tyre needs checking properly.

That’s a useful quick check, but it’s not the full picture. You should also look for cracking or bulging on the sidewall, uneven wear across the tread, and make sure your tyre pressures are correct, since low pressure wears tyres unevenly and affects handling.
