Car Diagnostics
A diagnostic check reads the fault codes stored in your car’s onboard computer and tells you exactly what’s triggering a warning light or a problem you’ve noticed while driving. At North East Auto Services, we use this to find out what’s actually wrong before it turns into a bigger, more expensive repair.
A warning light on your dashboard is the most common reason drivers come to us for a diagnostic check. The check engine light gets most of the attention, but an ABS light, an airbag light, or a light you don’t even recognise can all point to something worth investigating.
It isn’t always about a warning light, though. If your car is running rough, hesitating when you accelerate, using more fuel than it used to, or making a noise that wasn’t there last month, a diagnostic check is usually the quickest way to find out what’s behind it. Many of these faults won’t stop you from driving in the short term, which is exactly why they get ignored. Left alone, they tend to get worse, and the eventual repair is often bigger than it would have been if the issue had been caught early.
We connect your car to diagnostic equipment that scans the onboard systems and pulls any fault codes stored in the car’s computer. This gives our technicians a clear picture of your vehicle’s general health, rather than just confirming the one light that’s come on.
Every make and model logs faults slightly differently, so the equipment is built to interpret a wide range of codes accurately, from older engine management systems through to the sensors fitted to newer petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles. Once the scan is complete, we don’t just hand you a printout. One of our technicians goes through the report with you and explains what it means in plain English, not mechanic jargon.
If a fault is found, we’ll tell you what’s causing it, how urgent it is, and roughly what it would cost to put right. That way, you can decide what happens next with the full picture in front of you, rather than being told a part needs replacing without knowing why.
A small fault rarely stays small. A failing sensor, for example, can quietly affect fuel efficiency for months before it triggers a more serious issue elsewhere in the engine. Catching problems at this stage, before they cause damage to other components, usually means a smaller repair bill and far less time off the road.
Regular diagnostic checks are also useful even without a warning light, particularly if you’re buying a used car or preparing for a long journey. They give you a genuine sense of the car’s condition rather than relying on guesswork.
You’ll find our diagnostic equipment at every North East Auto Services branch – Peterlee, Chester-le-Street, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Gateshead, Hartlepool, and Seaham. Wherever you’re based, you can get a full diagnostic check done locally, without booking a slot at a main dealer or driving further than you need to.
Each branch is staffed by technicians who carry out diagnostic checks regularly, so you’re not waiting weeks for an appointment or paying dealer prices to find out what’s wrong. If a repair is needed afterwards, the same team can usually carry it out at the same branch.
Here are some questions that we’re often asked about diagnostic testing. If you don’t see the answer to your question, just give us a call on and we’ll be happy to help and to advise.
Most diagnostic checks take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how many systems need scanning and whether any fault codes need further investigation.
Not always. We’ll always talk you through what the diagnostic check has found and give you a quote before any repair work goes ahead.
We’d recommend booking ahead at your nearest branch so we can make sure diagnostic equipment and a technician are free when you arrive.
