How to tell if your tyres need attention

Check three things regularly: tread depth, tyre pressure, and the general condition of the rubber. Legally, tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but we’d recommend changing at around 3mm, since braking and handling both suffer noticeably below that.

Beyond tread depth, look out for:

• Cracks or bulges anywhere on the tyre
• Uneven wear across the tread, which can point to an alignment problem
• Pressure that’s noticeably low or needs topping up more often than usual

Tyre condition and tread are also checked as standard during every MOT test, so it’s a good habit to look them over yourself in between.
