A Class 4 MOT is the annual test required for most cars, along with motor caravans and vans up to 3,000kg, and it’s the test our LIDO branch is approved by the DVSA to carry out. Your vehicle needs its first MOT once it turns three years old, and then every year after that.

What Gets Checked During the Test

The test covers the parts of your vehicle that matter most for safety and roadworthiness, including brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and suspension. The examiner will also check your seatbelts, registration plate, windscreen, wipers, horn, and exhaust emissions, along with the condition of the bodywork where it could pose a safety risk. It isn’t a check on the engine’s general condition or performance, so a car can pass its MOT and still need other work doing.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready Beforehand

A few simple checks before you bring your vehicle in can help avoid an unnecessary fail. Make sure all your lights are working, your tyres have enough tread and are at the correct pressure, and your washer fluid is topped up so the wipers and washers can be tested properly. If your dashboard is showing a warning light, it’s worth mentioning this when you book in, since some faults are quicker to sort out if we know in advance.

Common Reasons Vehicles Fail

Some faults come up again and again at MOT time. Worn tyres, blown bulbs, and worn brake pads or discs are among the most frequent, and all three are things you can often spot yourself between visits. A windscreen chip sitting in the driver’s line of sight and an empty washer bottle are two more surprisingly common reasons for a fail, and both are simple enough to put right before you even book in. Driving without a valid MOT can also affect your insurance, so the risk goes beyond a fine if the certificate lapses.

If Your Vehicle Doesn’t Pass First Time

If your car or van fails, we’ll talk you through exactly what needs putting right and why, without the jargon. If you leave the vehicle with us and it’s fixed and retested on the same day, there’s usually no extra charge for the retest. If you take it away and bring it back within ten working days, a partial retest covering just the failed items may still apply. Either way, you’ll get a clear breakdown of the cost before any work goes ahead.

Only took my car in for a MOT so I can't say what its like for other services but the staff were friendly and the MOT was done in about 45mins.they contacted me when it ready. I did have the option to wait while it was done.
